Lhe vice-president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, was invested Wednesday, December 7 at the head of the country, shortly after the dismissal by the Parliament of the president Pedro Castillo. “I assume (power) in accordance with the Constitution of Peru, from this moment until July 26, 2026,” Ms. Boluarte, a 60-year-old lawyer, the first woman to lead Peru, told parliament. Earlier in the day, parliament voted to impeach President Pedro Castillo after the leftist leader announced his dissolution, as well as placing the country in a state of emergency.

The dismissal for “moral incapacity” of Pedro Castillo, broadcast live on television, was approved by 101 of the 130 parliamentarians. Elected in July 2021, Pedro Castillo had previously escaped two similar motions, the last of which was in March 2022. Pedro Castillo on Wednesday ordered parliament dissolved just hours before it convened to debate a motion to dismiss him. He also announced the establishment of an “exceptional government”. In a message to the nation delivered from the presidential palace, the left-wing leader said “temporarily dissolve the Congress of the Republic and establish an exceptional emergency government”.

American diplomacy said on Wednesday that it no longer considered Pedro Castillo as the country’s current president. “What I understand is that with the action of Congress, it’s now former President Castillo,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters, acknowledging the role of parliamentarians.
