Gujarat Polls 2022: Only hours are left to know the results of the Gujarat assembly elections held in two phases on December 1 and 5. This election is one that the country is eagerly looking forward to.

Those three friends are none other than Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakur and Jignesh Mevani…

Five years ago, this trio faced the election this time, having watered down a giant party like the BJP. Two of them took refuge in the BJP for their political survival while one stayed with the Congress. While Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakur sought refuge with the BJP, Jignesh Mevani stood with the Congress. That is, many political changes have taken place in the state in the last 5 years.

Patidar Andolan leader Hardik Patel left the Congress and joined the BJP a few months before the assembly elections. The BJP gave him a chance to contest from Virangam, a Congress bastion. There is a reason to say that this constituency is the stronghold of the Congress. In 2012, Congress’s Tejashree Patel defeated BJP’s Pragjibhai Patel by 16,983 votes in this constituency. Tejashree Patel, who later switched parties and joined the BJP, suffered a heavy defeat in 2017. In other words, she lost to Congress candidate Lakha Bharwad by 21,839 votes. Now BJP has entrusted Hardik Patel with the task of demolishing this steel fort….!
Indications are that Hardik, who had to struggle a lot to get a ticket, is not getting the support he wanted from the party. It is also a fact that when Hardik went to submit his nomination papers, none of the senior leaders of the party accompanied him. Hardik is trying to win on the strength of Modi’s popularity.
Alpesh Thakur is a great leader of backward class in the state.
Backward class population in the state is about 54%. Out of which Koli-Thakurs constitute 24%. In 2017, Alpesh became MLA from Radhanpur seat under Congress symbol, but resigned from Congress in 2019 and joined BJP. But in 2019, he lost to Raghu Desai of Congress by 3,800 votes in the by-election to Radhanpur seat in Banaskantha. Radhanpur seat was not safe for Alpesh. That is why Alpesh Thakur has been made the BJP candidate in Gandhinagar South this time. BJP’s Shambhuji Thakur won here by 8,011 votes in 2012 and 11,530 votes in 2017. However, here also there are indications that BJP’s local dissidents are in the field against Alpesh Thakur.
Jignesh also has no less challenge
Jignesh Mevani was an independent candidate supported by the Congress in 2017. Mevani defeated BJP’s Vijayakumar Chakraborty by 19,696 votes. Journalist and lawyer Jignesh Mevani is also a social activist. Apart from providing land to landless Dalits, he has also worked for victims of Muslim riots after 2002 and those killed in fake encounters. Therefore he has good influence among Muslims.
But Jignesh faces an allegation that Muslims who were arrested for protesting against the CAA-NRC did not do anything. Congress fears that this will split the Muslim vote. Asaduddin Owaisi’s party, AIMIM, has come forward to capitalize on this opportunity. Jignesh Mevani’s challenge is to win Muslim votes. Mevani got votes from Dalit Muslim and Thakur communities in the last elections. Keeping those voters in his fold is a big challenge for Mevani today.
