Riyadh: The Saudi Ministry of Health has issued a warning to be cautious against contagious flu. The ministry’s warning to people including non-residents is in view of the fact that there has been a significant increase in the number of infected people in the country in the past few days.

Ministry spokesperson Dr. Muhammad Al Abdul Ali said. More cases have already been reported this time than those reported in the last two years. This points to the extreme spread of the fever. He also informed that many of those who were admitted to the hospitals had to be shifted to intensive care units due to worsening of the disease. In some cases, fever can lead to death, he added.

It was found that the seasonal influenza vaccine protects 80 percent of the people from becoming serious. Abdul Ali said. Getting the flu vaccine is the most important way to protect against the influenza virus. He also informed that wearing a face mask is also an important preventive measure to prevent the spread of the disease. He said that one should be careful not to stand in the rain and cold wind.

The Ministry of Health recently organized a seasonal influenza vaccination campaign titled ‘The Moment You Want’. Apart from health sector workers, the campaign targeted special care groups such as the elderly, those with chronic diseases, immunocompromised and pregnant women. It is considered to have played a significant role in preventing the spread of the disease. The ministry pointed out that vaccination prevents 70 to 90 percent of infections of the disease.

Seasonal influenza can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, blood poisoning and death, the ministry said. Symptoms of seasonal influenza include severe chills, sweating, high body temperature, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, persistent cough, dehydration, and runny nose.

The ministry stated that the main ways to prevent the spread of influenza are to get vaccinated, avoid crowded places, wash hands thoroughly, avoid direct contact with eyes and mouth, use tissues when sneezing or coughing, and ensure cleanliness of the place. Officials also informed that those who want to take the vaccine should book through the Health Ministry’s Sihatti application.
