Firecrackers on New Year’s Eve? Fun for some, pure stress for others. Dogs and cats in particular suffer from the noise on New Year’s Eve, because they have a much finer hearing than humans. In order to protect the animals, the animal protection association for Berlin has now started the “Donations instead of firecrackers” campaign.

The Animal Welfare Association for Berlin eV (TVB) is starting its winter campaign “Donations instead of firecrackers” today. Large-format posters are hanging all over the city drawing attention to the New Year’s campaign. The association also accompanies the campaign with posts on its social media portals.

Ban firecrackers throughout Berlin

“The fireworks on New Year’s Eve harm people, animals and the environment alike,” says Eva Rönspieß, CEO of the TVB. “We have therefore been campaigning for years to ban rockets and firecrackers throughout Berlin.”

The deafening noise on New Year’s Eve means great stress for domestic and wild animals. They have much more sensitive hearing than humans and panic at the noise and brightly colored flashes of light. Some animals are even threatened with a heart attack. The environment is also not doing a favor with the New Year’s Eve firecrackers. Huge amounts of CO2 and particulate matter are blown into the air.

Fireworks are expensive pleasures

“At the same time, fireworks are an expensive pleasure: At the turn of the year 2021/22, around 20 million euros were smashed nationwide – and that despite far-reaching firecracker bans due to corona restrictions,” says Eva Rönspieß. “That’s why we appeal to the common sense of Berliners: do good deeds instead of blowing money pointlessly into the air, donate instead of banging your guns – for the sake of the animals!” A donation to Berlin’s animal welfare organization can also be a good Christmas present.
