The triumph of harmlessness
Pop singer Taylor Swift is set to direct her debut feature film. In cooperation with the US film studio Searchlight Pictures, which has already produced Oscar films such as “Nomadland”. Two scenarios of what the film could look like.
IHer music career is so successful that she gets bored herself. After Taylor Swift broke all records with her songs – she occupied all top ten places in the US charts at the same time; is the most listened to artist on Spotify 2022; has more American Music Awards (40) than anyone else – she wants to make her first feature film. The 32-year-old has already written screenplays for her own music videos. Now the US studio Searchlight Pictures, known for films like “Nomadland” and “Black Swan”, has announced a cooperation with Swift. “Taylor is an artist and storyteller like no other,” the statement said.
For a film company to take advantage of the reach of a woman who already feared Donald Trump in the presidential election – Swift is followed by 92 million people on Twitter – is not surprising at a time when influencers are being cast in films. The mystery is Taylor Swift herself. She used to be a country music artist with nice dresses and nice blonde hair. The epitome of harmlessness.
Her songs are about love and ex-boyfriends. Much has been written about their relationships and there was a scandal with Kanye West that didn’t allow her an award. But Swift himself was always conspicuously uncontroversial and apolitical, considered the girl-next-door icon of American conservatives. Until she suddenly shot Donald Trump on Twitter and came out as a Democrat. On her latest album “Midnights” the singer suddenly strikes melancholic electro sounds and reminds more of Billie Eilish than Shania Twain.
What could her script look like? One thinks of a young woman as the protagonist who has to discover the world because her heart has been broken. She actually wanted to breed therapy horses on her ex-fiancé’s ranch, but he cheated on her. Disappointed, she leaves her homeland and moves to New York. There she meets a musician who teaches her to live in the moment. Or else, she kills her ex-fiancé and founds an artists’ colony in Mexico – with therapy horses. The beauty of Taylor Swift is that you never really know.
