2022 World Cup in Qatardossier

While “CheckNews” had shown that a very shared image of the blues striker against England was a montage, a reader grabbed us about another shot showing Kylian Mbappé during the semi-final.

Question asked by TBT on December 15

Repeated twice. You asked us, during the French team’s quarter-final against England, to check if the viral image of Kylian Mbappé against six English players was authentic. We saw the French striker against six English players. As we explained, it was a montage made by the English sports news site 90mn.

A match later, your question relates to another spectacular image, again of Kylian Mbappé, this time during the victorious semi-final, and again surrounded by six players (but Moroccans, therefore).

“Very big supplier of Renaissance tables this game”quips a surfer, broadcasting a mosaic of photos, including the one that interests us (top left).

Much less static than the “English” montage, this image is very authentic. It is the work of photographer Aksil Ouali for the Turkish agency Anadolu, and was taken in the 5th minute of the match, during the action that brought the first French goal. Antoine Griezmann overflows on the right, serves Kylian Mbappé in the box, who strikes. The striker’s shot is deflected, and reaches Théo Hernandez, who acrobatically adjusts the Moroccan goalkeeper to open the scoring.

A similar situation on the second goal

On this still image of this video (at 49 seconds), we find exactly the layout of the photograph, from another angle. The French striker (who is about to strike here, as in the photo) is surrounded by the same six players who can be seen in the photo.

A situation which is reminiscent of that of the second goal, which occurred in the 79th minute. Again, Kylian Mbappé, this time served by Marcus Thuram, is in the middle of a forest of players.

After a series of dribbles, he manages to strike. Again, his shot is deflected and arrives at the feet of Randal Kolo Muani, who has just come into play, who only has to push the ball into the back of the net.
