Vatican: Pope Francis has ordered the return of 3 statues from the Parthenon temple as a sign of friendship, the Vatican said. Ancient Greek artefacts belong to a 2500-year-old mosque. Before being converted into a mosque, the Parthenon, a traditional religious site that was a sacred church, was a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess of protection, the Virgin Athena.
A Parthian structure can be said to be an archaic monument that records all the changes in history, whether it is a treasury, a Greek temple, a Christian church, or an Islamic mosque.
Construction work on this traditional religious site began in 447 BC during the reign of the Athenian Empire, and the temple was fully opened for public worship in 432 BC. The temple is said to be a fine example of the Doric architectural style, one of the three highest levels of Greek architecture.

As a sign of friendship, Pope Francis has ordered the return of three statues from the Parthenon in Athens, the Vatican said on Friday (16 Dec 2022). AFP reports that no time frame has been given as to when the three cultural heritage items will be returned.

The papal artefacts collection and the Vatican Museums have housed the 3 Parthenon objects in the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for centuries.
The Pope decided to “donate” these cultural landmarks of Greece of traditional importance to the Orthodox Archbishop of Athens. The Vatican said the materials provide “a concrete sign” of fostering interfaith relations.
Parthenon, the temple has not been a place of worship since it was attacked and looted in 1687. Artifacts removed from this looted World Heritage temple are housed in many important museums around the world.
It is now speculated that the pope may donate three statues: one of the four chariot horses of the guardian goddess Athena, the head of a child depicted as having taken part in a procession to the founding of Athens, and another statue of a bearded man.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Greece has been trying to restore these traditional artefacts. In a similar move, a cult statue from the Parthenon that belonged to the Vatican earlier was handed over to Greece in 2008, according to the official Vatican news website.

The temple was the treasury of the Delian Alliance, which later became the Athenian Empire. At the end of the sixth century it was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Then, after the Ottoman conquest in the early 1460s, the church dedicated to the Virgin became a mosque.
