Supreme Court dismisses Bilgis Banu’s revision petition against release of 11 persons | Bilkis Bano’s review plea dismissed by Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court dismissed the review petition filed by Bilkis Banu, a victim, against the early release of 11 convicts in the gang rape case.

In 2002, a woman named Bilgis Banu was gang-raped in the aftermath of the Godhra train burning in Gujarat. Also 7 members of his family were murdered.

The Supreme Court, hearing the petition filed by 11 convicts involved in the crime seeking their release before the end of their sentence, asked the Gujarat state government to consider the matter. Based on this, all the 11 accused were acquitted a few months ago. Aggrieved Bilgis Banu filed a revision petition against this order of the Supreme Court.

A bench headed by Chief Justice TY Chandrachud had said that it was considering taking up this review petition for hearing.

In this situation, the Supreme Court dismissed the review petition of Bilgis Banu. The order was passed on December 13 by a bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath. This order of the court has not been uploaded yet. However, the case was dismissed by the Supreme Court’s Registrar’s Office and Bilkis Banu’s lawyer, Shoba Gupta, was informed.

In a letter dated Friday (Dec 16) to Bilkis Banu’s counsel, the Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court said, “I am hereby informed that the review petition filed by the above-mentioned petitioner (Bilkis Banu vs Union of India) in the Supreme Court has been dismissed by the Court on December 13, 2022.” It was reported that.

Earlier, in the Supreme Court, “All these 11 people were released because of good behavior and serving more than 15 years in prison. It may be recalled that this decision was taken under the principle of commutation of sentence given by the Supreme Court in 1992.
