A two-year-old boy survived being swallowed by a rogue hippopotamus in a miraculous incident in Uganda. The hippo spat out the drowned boy after a bystander threw stones at the animal. Capital FM Uganda reported quoting the police.
The young child was playing on the banks of a lake in Katwe Kabadoro town near his home on December 4 when a hungry hippo grabbed him with its huge jaws. Before the animal swallowed him whole, a bystander named Crispas Bagonza started throwing stones at it. Capital FM Uganda added that the boy was therefore spat out again.
Police said the boy, identified as Iga Pal, grabbed the boy’s head and swallowed half of his body. They added that the boy sustained an injury on his hand and was sent to the hospital for further treatment. “The victim was immediately taken to a nearby clinic for treatment and sustained an injury to his hand. He was later transferred to Bwera Hospital for further treatment. He has fully recovered and was discharged after receiving a rabies vaccination,” Uganda Police added in a press release.
However, the police spokesperson cautioned parents staying near animal sanctuaries such as lakes and wildlife centers to be wary of animals such as crocodiles and hippos.

Hippos, although herbivores, can become very aggressive when threatened. There have also been incidents of them attacking boats. A few months ago, an angry hippo attacked three lions as they tried to cross a river at the Selinda Reserve spillway in Botswana. The Great Plains Conservation shared a video of the incident on YouTube, calling it an “unforgettable moment.”
It is estimated that around 500 people die every year in Africa due to hippo attacks. This number is surprisingly high. More animals die from attacks than any other animal on Earth. Hippos are said to be one of the deadliest land animals in the world.
