If you have an iPhone or even one of Samsung’s flagship devices, you’re probably used to your devices charging quickly just fine. But in the flagship devices of the Chinese manufacturers, the direction is more “fast and furious, and maybe keep a fire extinguisher handy”. In the last day, Xiaomi published a video in which it shows charging with a power that might be able to charge the Tesla for some of you as well.

Hot, hot, boiling – your version of the battery

A new device from Redmi, Xiaomi’s subsidiary brand, comes with a charging capacity of – hold tight – 300 watts. The device – Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition – appeared on the brand’s official page on the Chinese social network Weibo. The post where it was featured also included a rather impressive purpose demonstration video.

The Note 12 Discovery Edition comes with a 4100mAh battery and Xiaomi presents its crazy charging capabilities, which led to the fact that it can be charged from 0% to 100% battery in less than 5 minutes (4:54 seconds to be exact). It is important to note that charging is of course up to a power of 300 watts and as you can see in the video, the device is charged at its peak with a power of about 285 watts.

Like many of these videos, it is about charging in laboratory conditions and it is not yet a device that reaches the general public. Xiaomi also emphasized that the device came with about 50 safety measures to prevent it from catching fire.

The charging technology is based on a GaN charger, which uses gallium nitride (Gallium Nitride) – a semiconductor that consists of the elements gallium and nitrogen, and is known for its high electrical conductivity and its ability to withstand high temperatures (compared to, for example, gallium arsenic or silicon), while charging more efficiently than traditional and temporary chargers The loading is shortened. Everything is just supposed to be better. According to Xiaomi it used a “double GaN” charger although it didn’t specify exactly what that meant. The company also states that it changed the structure of the battery in the device and the materials from which it is made – but again, it is not detailed how exactly this was done and what the changes were made in terms of battery materials.

This is probably the last charger you will need to buy

The competitor that is coming to users in a moment

And if Redmi’s device is only in the lab, it has a competitor that will soon reach users around the world. Realme’s GT3 that was announced a month ago (under the name GT Neo 5 and that’s how it was also sold in China), and at the MWC exhibition in Barcelona it became known that it will now reach the first users. This is a flagship device with a Qualcomm chip, a huge screen and heaps of storage and RAM.

But the most interesting part of it is its charging capabilities. According to Realme, the new device supports charging at a power of 240W, and it does so with the help of its USB-C connection that supports the USB PD 3.1 standard. In other words, for the first time a smartphone manufacturer reaches the maximum charging speed of the USB PD 3.1 standard, as determined by the USB-IF standardization organization.

The device comes with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 4,600mAh, and according to Realme, it will be possible to charge it from 1% battery to 100% battery in only 9 and a half minutes. If you get to the charging socket when the battery indicator shows you 50% you can reach 100% in just 4 minutes. The device will reach users around the world starting this May, so you have two more months to buy a fire extinguisher to put next to it.
