US authorities said that an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook a densely populated area of New York City on Friday morning, with buildings shaking throughout Manhattan.
New York Governor Kathy Hokul said: “A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck western Manhattan and was felt throughout New York.
Hokul added, “My team is assessing the effects and any damage that may occur, and we will update the data to the public throughout the day.”
The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was near the Lebanon area in New Jersey.
The New York Fire Department confirmed that there were no initial reports of damage.
This, and the media indicated that people in distant areas such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut, and other areas of the East Coast who are not accustomed to earthquakes expressed their feeling of the ground shaking.
The tremors sparked memories of the August 23, 2011 earthquake that shook tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada.
The earthquake measured 5.8 degrees, the strongest earthquake to hit the East Coast since World War II, and the epicenter was in Virginia.
