On Wednesday night, a 49-year-old man, who was taken there on Tuesday evening to sober up, died in a Narva arrest house, BNS reports.
The suspected cause of death is a sudden deterioration in health; the cause will be determined during an autopsy.
At 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police received a report that a drunk man was lying on a park bench on Pähklimäe Street in Narva. “Since the man was drunk, could not give his name or home address, and he also had identification documents, the police decided to take him to sober up,” said the head of the Narva Patrol Service, Silver Pälsing.
According to him, the drunk man was cooperative and, according to the police, did not need medical intervention. “We always prefer to take drunk people home, but since the man could not give his name and had no identification, for his own safety it was decided to take him to sober up. In the cell, his condition was constantly checked through the window in the door and the surveillance camera. Shortly before midnight, the man fell on his back and an employee came in to check on his condition. The man was breathing and moving. Ten minutes later, the officer decided to check the man’s condition again and noticed that he was no longer breathing. Officers immediately began reviving him and continued trying to revive him until the ambulance arrived. Unfortunately, the doctors were unable to save his life,” Pyalsing said.
The police will check the circumstances of the incident and the actions of the officers to assess the condition of the detainee during an internal check.
