A 6.4-magnitude earthquake on the open climb of Richter shook the northeast of Coquimbo on Wednesday and was felt strong in San Juan and Mendoza. Chilean authorities did not report damage or casualties.

The earthquake took place at 8:48 p.m., reaching a depth of 10 kilometers and measuring 6.6 on the Richter Scale, with its epicenter in Coquimbo, where it did not produce material damage, but did cause commotion among its inhabitants.

According to the report of the National Institute for Seismic Prevention (Inpres), the telluric movement was warned in San Juan, since it occurred 340 kilometers to the northwest of the province and also in Mendoza, 403 kilometers from its northwest region. Some of the inhabitants of these towns in Cuyo stated that they had felt the tremor, albeit slightly.

For its part, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service of Chile (Senapred) assured that the movement was registered between the Atacama and Metropolitan regions.

Images of products falling from the shelves in supermarkets in the Chilean cities of La Serena and Coquimbo were shared on social networks.
