Almost 200 people, 4,000 euros in drinks alone and an amount payable of 5,050 euros. These are the figures that speak of the most multitudinous ‘simpa’ known in our country. The victim of this illegal practice is a hostess of a restaurant in Galicia, who offered a baptism from which everyone left without paying.

The owner, María Suárez, speaks before the Investigation Team cameras giving details of what happened. “The child’s father paid bail, a total of 3,500, and the rest had to be paid on the day of the event,” she says. The menu (we insist, for about 200 diners) consisted of a first course “based on sausages” and a salad of “vegetables, cucumber, asparagus, boiled egg, tomato”; a second of “Roman-style hake with steamed potatoes” and a third of “grilled meat with Creole chorizo and potatoes”, as well as dessert and drinks.

What caught María’s attention the most before the ‘simpa’ was the request about alcoholic beverages. “You had to put a bottle of whiskey on the table at the beginning of the meal. Finish one and put another,” she told him.

After a night of eating, drinking and enjoying themselves, at checkout time everyone disappeared and went outside to watch fireworks. That’s when they left in the cars, leaving behind the more than 5,000 euros that remained to be paid. “You can’t have full-blown parties and put the burden on others, who live by working,” denounces the owner.
