A beloved child character or a serial killer? The dark side of Winnie the Pooh

by time news

There is no person in the world who does not know Winnie the Pooh and his cheerful gang, who for 95 years have delighted the hearts of children in their various adventures. But what if I told you that very soon the endearing characters will get a particularly dark twist? You’ll probably think I’m kidding you, but no. In the not-too-distant future at all, Pooh and his gang will actually star in the horror film “Pooh the Bear: Blood and Honey.”

The new film will of course not be released under the Disney company’s flag, since under American copyright law any work that has been 95 years old since its release becomes public domain. It so happened that on January 1, 2022, all the characters that appeared in the original work of Winnie the Pooh, first published on October 14, 1926, are no longer considered exclusive to Disney, who acquired the rights in 1961. Despite this, Disney does maintain exclusivity in the works it has released with the characters in the past so the new film will only be able to address the characters and plot that appeared in the first book.

According to the film’s plot, as creator and director Rhais Waterfield detailed in an interview with Variety, Poe and his friend Piglet were abandoned by their human friend Christopher Robin who left for academic studies and as a result their lives deteriorated and they embark on a massacre. “Because of all the media noise surrounding the photos released from the set, we intend to finish the production as soon as possible, but still place emphasis on quality,” the creator said.

The film itself was shot within 10 days in England, close to the Ashdon Forest which was the inspiration for the magical forest of Poe and his friends. Once completed, the film will be distributed by ITN Studios worldwide. This is of course if the production manages to move far enough away from the resemblance to Disney works and thus avoid a lawsuit.

Referring to the legal issue, the creator Waterfield said that “we tried to be extremely careful. We know there is a fine line we are walking on and we know they still have some of the legal rights and their works as a basis, we did everything we could to maintain the 1926 line.”

As part of sticking to the original line, Tiger’s character will not appear in the film, as she was only born in a work that came out two years after the first book. Plus, Pooh’s red shirt will not be able to appear in the film, as this is an idea created by Disney.

The film does not yet have an official release date, but the media buzz and discourse in the networks around it have raised expectations for it to an extraordinary level. Now it remains only to wait and see if Disney will try, and succeed, to prevent its distribution and if not – will Winnie the Pooh be remembered as a serial killer following the film.
