On the last day of our stay in Csömödér (Zala county), Anikó Molnárné, forest engineer and forest educator, appeared with a Bengal stick locust in her hand. The students of the Albert Bedő forestry school in Ásotthalm looked at the charming little animal with interest. Anikó told me that when there is an opportunity and it is possible to bring the arthropod to school, on that day her daughters are the most popular and the wildest. Only the poor grasshopper doesn’t enjoy the cake so much, sometimes he even dies. Fortunately, there is no problem, because this insect is a widespread terrarium ornament, even beginner terrarists can safely keep it, it is one of the easiest grasshopper species to reproduce.

The stick locust is usually gentle, it even climbs on our hands, but you have to be very careful with it, especially when you pick it up. We gently hold his trunk between our thumb and forefinger, never his legs, and place him on our palm, or just put our palm in front of him and encourage him to climb on it!

Its taste is excellent: blackberries are usually the best food for most locusts. Raspberry, ice cream, hawthorn, oak, rose and ivy also suit him. However, it is cheap, on jofogas.hu you can buy a Bengal stickman for as little as HUF 1,500, which, contrary to its name, does not live in Bengal, but in Vietnam, in the Annam region, in the thickets.
