The writer Iñaki Irazu seasoned the book of poetry ‘Zakur zaunkak’ (Susa) by “immersing” in memory. That’s right, not only in one’s own memory, but in a “kind of collective memory”. In fact, as the Atesasian writer has defended, “a book is a social production, it is not the result of an I, it is a we”. As he explained during the meeting, he used the tools provided by fiction to realize the book of poetry and worked “by pulling on the paths provided by them”. This essence, as emphasized by the author, is perfectly reflected by the cover made by Alain Urrutia. “It is concordant with the stories inside, dusk or dawn, we see the cold. And it preserves harmony”, praised the author.

Leire Lopez Ziluaga, the editor of the Susa publishing house, believes that the lives of the characters are “marked” by politics, something that happened or their social situation, among other things. The stories that are reflected in the 20 poems that make up the book are also varied, such as that of someone who was beaten in the 1936 war, that of a priest who had long hands in a religious school, that of a militant killed by the police, that of a missing child or those who suffered torture or those who make small houses after retirement. “The book covers the world from the 1936 war to the present day,” summarizes Lopez Ziluaga.

In this regard, they explained that the reason for the brand will not only be seen by the readers, but also by the protagonist himself. “There is a constant in the book, the characters in it will see or understand something and in some cases they will die after that, as if understanding is the goal of life.”

The one presented this Wednesday is Irazu’s second book of poems after the work ‘Rrukiaren saria’ (Erein) published in 2018. As the Susa editor explains, several elements will be familiar to those who have read it, including “the shape that predominates before you open it and start reading, because all the lines have a similar length, creating a kind of symmetry throughout the book”. In this regard, he explained that most of the lines are given in “two strokes”, since many of them consist of two words or, alternatively, a maximum of four words are used.

However, the shape is not the only feature that he wanted to highlight, and Lopez Ziluaga emphasized the tone that is not so obvious. “The narrative tone of a calm storyteller gives unity to the book.” In his words, it is because it is not so remarkable and it takes the reader from the first line to the last “almost without realizing it”. As Irazu elaborated, when the choir gives a concert, the director gives them the tone to know where they should play. “The opening paragraphs of the poem ‘The Scar’ in the book” which is beautifully captured. This general tone “is sometimes friendly or humble, at other times more intense; sometimes it’s small and more connected to the usual, at other times it takes the path of a dream.’

As the synopsis says, “if the poet is walking somewhere, he is walking in the pages of the forest of memory. It moves along the paths of words that have taken shape forever, crossing the wrinkles of terror, the claws of the night, specks of light, underground rooms and stone shelters in its passage. The accounts of the war and the black fog of the following years come in Iñaki Irazu’s second book of poems, a return to places that have never been left and to people that have never been greeted.”
