In 2020, Mariana Michelini, 35 years old, underwent a filler procedure on her lips, chin and the region of the malar bone, an area known as cheekbones, with a health professional in Matão (SP). Six months later, she woke up with a swollen face and a lot of pain.

After a biopsy, he discovered that the product applied in the procedure was PMMA, and not hyaluronic acid, as he imagined.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a definitive filler in gel form, used in aesthetic procedures and to correct lipodystrophies, alterations in the amount of fat in the body.

Since the 2000s, doctors do not usually use this substance because it is permanent and adheres to the skin, muscles and bones. When there is inflammation, removing it without damaging these structures is almost impossible.

Currently, dermatologists and plastic surgeons prefer filling with hyaluronic acid, present in the human body and reproduced in the laboratory. It is considered safe and can be removed.

Since 2021, Mariana has undergone treatments with antibiotics and corticosteroids, interventions to remove parts of the PMMA, and surgery that removed her upper lip.

In December 2023, he underwent reconstructive surgery, the next one should be done in a few months.
