A Brief History of Nvidia’s Success

by time news

Where does the success of Nvidia come from, the largest microchip company in the world and the second company by market capitalization. The analysis by Alessandro Aresu, author of “The Domination of the 21st Century”.

The final numbers from NVIDIA are in before the release of my book on NVIDIA and AI at the end of October (Geopolitics of Artificial IntelligenceFeltrinelli), which I have been working on since 2022, which concludes my “trilogy” of political capitalism. In the meantime, here’s a timeline of NVIDIA and the market.

2008

The financial crisis is coming. Times difficult for 15-year-old NVIDIA. CUDA investment is already underway, and there are concerns about competition from AMD and Intel in key markets.

2009

Crisis leads to downward correction in NVIDIA’s revenues. Jensen Huang speaks of a “challenging and uncertain environment” but “one of the best years for innovation.” And Bill Dally becomes chief scientist.

2010

Jensen without his leather jacket writes to shareholders about the recession’s dramatic impact on sales, including phrases like “if the CPU is the brain of the computer, the GPU is its soul.” He talks about the “parallel world” of CUDA as an infrastructure for science.

2011

Intel (which still seemed like the unreachable giant) agrees to pay 1.5 billion to NVIDIA. A major legal victory in a long chase.

2012

NVIDIA underlines in his calculations the importance of supercomputers, and in particular the completion of Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Titan, with “18,688 Tesla GPUs”.

2013

NVIDIA appointment Colette Kress, CFO. Formerly at Cisco and Microsoft, she will accompany the company’s incredible ride on the stock market over the last decade.

2014

It begins cause NVIDIA’s clash with Qualcomm and Samsung, one of the latest signs of NVIDIA’s heavy defeat in the mobile market, which Jensen later called a “strategic retreat.”

2015

NVIDIA underlines that the world’s 15 most efficient supercomputers all use its Tesla GPUs.

2016

NVIDIA è la Yahoo Finance Company of the Year. L’item It remains a good summary of the company, even today, almost 8 years later. It already contains the classic question “is NVIDIA a bubble?”.

2017

Jensen he says: “We can now see that GPU-based deep learning will revolutionize major industries (Internet, transportation, healthcare, manufacturing). The era of artificial intelligence is upon us.”

2018

Jensen he says: “Artificial intelligence is advancing at an incredible pace around the world, driving record revenues for our data center platforms.”

2019

After the worsening of the accounts, Jensen underlines the return to positive trajectory and above all the ongoing acquisition of Mellanox, to improve the data center offering.

2020

With record data center revenue and “NVIDIA AI” enabling new applications, Jensen claims the company’s positioning in the most important technological trends of our time.

2021

Jensen underlines the great strength of the A100 among customers. He also talks about the “smartphone moment for every industry” through AI, the acquisition of Mellanox and the “good progress in the acquisition of ARM”.

2022

The year of NVIDIA’s last significant decline, where the volatility of the crypto market played a significant role, which had influenced GPU sales far more than expected (and communications, with a MORE of the SEC).

2023

The Year Bill Dally come in in Silicon Valley’s Engineering Hall of Fame: a great researcher and academic who became the protagonist of the NVIDIA revolution. One of my favorite characters, an unsung hero of our time.

THERE’S NO STORY LIKE NVIDIA’S

These flashes to remember that every success has a story. This is a long story, even in the “accelerated” life. There are wrong paths, suffering, stubborn bets. Only after that do you get to the “Jensenmania” I spoke about Who.

Over the past few years, I have written extensive research on companies like ASML, Huawei, Palantir, TSMC, and many others. No one is a technologist and salesman “in parallel” like Jensen. But no one is invincible, although no story is quite like NVIDIA’s.
