Black cherry “never caused any problems for people” et “nothing justified” cut down, according to officials of the Abruzzo National Park.

The animal was one of 60 brown bears in the National Park and her two cubs, now motherless, are actively sought after.

It is “incomprehensible” that such an animal which posed no danger could be slaughtered, lamented the president of the Abruzzo region, Marco Marsilio.

The Marsican brown bear, native to central Italy, is a critically endangered subspecies of the brown bear.

The death of Amarena “represents a blow that reduces the chances of survival of these bears”, denounced in a press release the NGO World Wide Fund (WWF) Italy. WWF said it was considering taking civil action against the shooter.
