A Bulgarian student won a scholarship to Oxford University. This is Dimitar Dimitrov, a high school senior from the French high school in Sofia, for whom thought flows as smoothly in Latin and ancient Greek as in Bulgarian. Thanks to the knowledge, there are offers to continue his studies at leading universities in England.

For him, classical languages are a way of self-awareness. Relating to antiquity and dwelling in the fullness of history. He took his first steps in the world of Antiquity in the 8th grade. And every hour it is more and more seized, writes BNT.

“Latin and ancient Greek are languages linked to the art of living well and blissfully with philosophy, they are languages of science, of knowledge,” says Dimitar Dimitrov, a 12th grade student at the 9th FEG Alphonse de Lamartine.

Last year his love for Antiquity took him to the Vivarium Novum Academy near Rome – where Latin and Ancient Greek come to life.

“All the teachers and students talk to each other only in Latin in their daily life and in the study hours, even the roommates speak only in these ancient languages”.

But Dimitar does not stop there. He set his sights on Jesus College, Oxford, to develop the knowledge he had accumulated so far, but also to acquire new ones.

“It’s just one of the places that could offer the most challenging application process that he wanted to get into through research, through Latin and Ancient Greek exams, through several interviews,” explained Dimitar Dragnev, a Latin teacher. language in 9. FEG “Alphonse de Lamartine”.

He is applying for the only Oxford University scholarship he can apply for. And it was selected for 4-year training among youth from over 50 countries.

“The course fee itself and the minimum prices for living, accommodation, food and other consumables add up to £200,000. For now, with the help of this scholarship and with the support of my parents, who are, after all, average working people, we manage to cover £100,000 of that amount”.

And the step after Oxford is a return to Bulgaria, because he believes that thanks to the classical languages, as much as we look back, we see forward into the future. And he wants to prove it in his homeland.
