This isn’t the first time Cartwheel has taken a picture of the galaxy. James Webb’s predecessor, Hubble, also photographed the Cartwheel Galaxy. However, it was not so clear. Two baby galaxies near the Cartwheel are also visible in this powerful infrared image. Additionally, James Webb has provided critical information on star birth and the central black hole in the Cartwheel Galaxy.
The Cartwheel Galaxy was once a spiral galaxy. Collisions with smaller galaxies have transformed them into the shape of a wagon wheel. Another characteristic of the Cartwheel Galaxy is the two rings that formed from the center of the collision. These bright rings of light are getting farther and farther apart.
It is reminiscent of the splashing of stones in a pond. Therefore, researchers have included Cartwheel in the ring galaxy category. New star clusters are now forming in the brighter parts of the cartwheel, captured by James Webb. There is also a large amount of dust here.
