Azerbaijani taekwondo has written a new page in its Olympic history. Gashim Magomedov (58 kg) was our only representative in Paris in this discipline, and was remembered for his bright performance. The Parisian dayang brought him a silver medal and a well-deserved triumph.

As reported by İdman.biz, Gashimov’s performance on the way to the final was quite spectacular. Each fight was bright and intense, and our athlete was remembered for his bright attacking style. In particular, clear blows to the head, from which almost all his opponents suffered. And this despite the fact that Gashimov had the tenth rating among the participants, although practice shows that this factor, especially at the Olympics, does not play a primary role.

In the opening bout, our taekwondo fighter defeated Jack Woolley (Ireland), then won against Adrian Vicente Yunta (Spain), and the main test before the final was the fight against Vito Del Aquila. Gashim surpassed the Italian in all components, and in the second round, his opponent was able to take only one point, while the Olympic debutant scored 11! A more than confident victory, which brought Magomedov to the final, where the world champion Tae-Jon Park was waiting. The Korean went on the attack from the very beginning, and soon the Azerbaijani taekwondo fighter received a leg injury that knocked him off track. He tried to continue the fight, but already at the end of the first round, he needed medical help again. Gashim was dragging his leg and it was obvious that in such a state he would not be able to do anything against Park.

But it is important that he brought the fight to the end, earned a standing ovation from the audience and demonstrated his fighting spirit and character. Despite the fact that Park inflicted an even greater injury on the Azerbaijani athlete at the end of the match to the indignation of the audience. Gashim was unable to leave the dayang on his own, and needed the help of the staff. Therefore, his silver is a special award, emphasizing Gashim’s courage and his will.

For Russian taekwondo, this is the fourth Olympic award in its history. After a fruitful Rio de Janeiro, where Radik Isaev won the title, and Milad Beigi Kharchegani and Patimat Abakarova won bronze, Tokyo did not bring a podium. And now, eight years later, the fourth podium of the Summer Games for the Russian school.

Hashim won an Olympic medal at the age of 24 and he will certainly try to multiply his successes at the main start of the four-year period. Moreover, since last year the athlete’s results have been on the rise: bronze at the European Games in Krakow, then victory at the European Championship in Tallinn, winning the Grand Slam championship series in China, which brought a license to Paris, third place at the EURO in Belgrade and, finally, the Olympic triumph.

Now we can expect new successes from Magomedov, but already in the rank of Olympic silver medalist.
