Risk genes change the diagnosis and treatment of the nerve disease. This is also known through German pioneering research. But who benefits from testing? The specialist society has published new guidelines.
For a long time, Parkinson’s disease was considered a purely sporadic movement disorder, with environmental influences being the main cause and genetic causes playing almost no role. That has changed radically. The diagnosis and treatment of the comparatively common nervous disorder are currently receiving more than just a refresher with the publication of the completely revised S2k guidelines developed by the German Society for Neurology and 19 other domestic and foreign specialist societies.
In addition to new drug therapies for the many comorbidities and a reassessment of imaging, the guidelines also contain concrete recommendations for human genetic diagnostics. The importance of the genetic predisposition in affected patients has grown enormously in recent years.
