It’s difficult to find someone in Australia who likes Scott Morrison. Last Friday, the Prime Minister appeared for the first time to acknowledge that his persona is one of the reasons many Australians appear to be turning their backs on the Conservative government. “There are things that need to change in the way I do them,” he said, with a rare hint of self-criticism. The online newspaper Crikey summed up the reaction of many observers: “A man known for his arrogant self-assurance, who in his life as a brutal politician has never admitted to making mistakes, eight days before an election suddenly promises to change.”
