The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed its “deep sorrow over the loss of this child” and warned of “the danger of floods and heavy rains, calling on parents and caregivers to educate children about the risks that may result from playing near accumulated water.”

UNICEF stressed that “this incident is a dangerous indicator of the increasing challenges facing Libya due to climate change, as the country is frequently exposed to severe weather phenomena such as heavy rains and floods, which threaten the lives of children and adults alike.”

The international organization called for “the need to take urgent measures to provide a safer environment for children, by raising awareness of the risks resulting from climate change, and providing the necessary infrastructure to protect communities from the effects of these changes.”

UNICEF pointed out that “drowning accidents are one of the main causes of death for children in many countries, and that preventing them requires the combined efforts of all concerned parties, including governments, international organizations, and civil society.”
