More surprises await from the prehistoric Flat Mound on “Brezovsko Shosse”

“I don’t know of anyone finding anything like this.” This is how the archaeologist Desislava Davidova determined her next blow when she recently discovered over 500 coins and a gold ingot in the center of Plovdiv.

The surprises bequeathed by the ancient inhabitants of Philippopolis did not stop throughout the summer. At the same time, more secrets keep coming to light.

Unsuspectingly, Davidova came across a hoard of coins as well as valuable ceramics during the salvage excavations on private land at the foot of the Old Town. Already on the second day of the study, she discovered

– luck that not every archaeologist has. It is supposed to be from a pedestal on a statue and is associated with the reign of the emperor Septimius Severus.

The big sensation, however, is the gold blank for jewelry making. It was not for the production of coins, but was probably intended for embellishment and making some kind of jewelry.

Most of the coins that Davidova found are bronze and prove that the terrain has been inhabited for over 2500 years. They are from different periods. The earliest are from the 4th century BC, when it was the age of Hellenism, most of them are Roman, there are also late antique ones and those from the Early Middle Ages.

These days, Davidova and her colleague Stoyan Ivanov renewed the excavations on “Brezovsko shose”, where they are studying the prehistoric Flat mound for the third year. So far, shells, two-story dwellings, decorated pottery and human figures have been found there.

The object is important because its dating starts from the late Neolithic – 6th millennium BC. What else they will find remains to be seen.

One of the big surprises this summer was the terrain under the demolished Concrete Bridge. The railway line Sofia – Burgas passes from there. It turned out that under the bridge, which will be rebuilt so that the high-speed trains can pass unhindered, there is a suburban villa from the 2nd century of a wealthy resident of Philippopolis.

“The scale of the ancient walls, which are nearly 900 square meters, suggests a magnificent residential building outside the boundaries of the ancient city,” commented the archaeologist from NAIM at the National Academy of Sciences Petar Zidarov.

According to him, the building functioned for nearly two centuries within the Roman Empire and changed its purpose – it was upgraded and expanded.

Graves were also discovered next to it, coins were found,

A unique Thracian temple from the 3rd century BC. and there is the surprise of the Great Mound on the outskirts of Plovdiv. Its roof is gabled with girders on which gneiss slabs are arranged. The temple consists of two rooms. The eastern one is square in shape and measures 4 by 4 meters.

“We found that there are no remains of any burials – neither cremation nor burial. However, there is a lot of broken pottery, hearths and a large number of bones from over 10 species of animals. This shows that rituals were performed in this temple”, commented archaeologist Kostadin Kisiv.
