Heavy rain fell on the capital Conakry on the night of Friday 23 to Saturday 24 August, causing significant damage to households.

In Matoto Fassa, many households suffered from the natural force of the storm and about ten houses ended up in the water. To save themselves, the Camara family had to break down the neighboring wall that was blocking the water drain. According to the head of the family, Mohamed Camara, had it not been for this demolition, the worst might have happened.

“We all know the amount of water that fell on Conakry today. All our houses were flooded and it was impossible to get out since the door was barred. We had to wait a little while for the flow to drop a little so that I could get out, but for the buildings below (among the young people, editor’s note), it was not possible,” explained Mohamed Camara. And he added: “we had to go into the courtyard next door to break down the wall and make way for the road since the gutter is blocked by their construction and the channel left is small. Had it not been for that, I imagine the worst,” he defended.

In the neighbouring Diallo family, tension quickly rose and the father of the family filed a complaint because of the act committed by the Camara family.

“They came to our house with a hammer and other objects, they broke our wall and the water got into my car, it won’t turn on anymore. They accuse me of blocking the road but I’m not the water. Plus, there’s a gutter. If they’re invaded, let them find a solution too, but for them the solution is to break my wall and I’m not going to accept that. The neighborhood chief will decide between us since that’s the 2ndth times,” defended Mamadou Aliou Diallo.

Present on the scene, the president of the neighborhood council wanted to raise awareness on both sides. A meeting between the Camara and Diallo families is proposed in order to find a solution to this problem that has been going on for years now.
