UK retail sales fell by more than expected in June amid unusually cool weather last month. This is indicated by the preliminary data of the British National Statistics Office, announced today and quoted by Reuters, reports BTA.

“The cooler and wetter weather in the spring and early summer, combined with an atmosphere of general uncertainty in the run-up to the general election, appears to have deterred consumers from buying both seasonal and more expensive goods.” This is stated by Lisa Hooker, who is a leading analyst of consumer attitudes at the consulting company “PricewaterhouseCoopers” (PwC).

On July 4, general parliamentary elections were held in Great Britain, which were convincingly won by the Labor Party, analysts recall.

Data from another survey, also published today, showed UK consumer sentiment in July reached its highest level since September 2021.
