Justice Minister Vijayadasa Rajapaksa has said that without the cooperation of the civil society, a corruption-free country cannot be created.
He said this while speaking at an event held in Colombo.
“The 21st Amendment to the Constitution can also introduce a new anti-corruption law as a new law that will determine the future direction of the country.
Also, through the new anti-corruption law, it is possible to get the support of the president whenever necessary.
The Act also gives the Chancellor the necessary powers to grant legal advice and legal aid.
Currently, the Commissioners of the Bribery Commission are retired government officials.
Steps will be taken to appoint qualified serving government officials and civilian representatives with a view to changing the system and setting up an efficient and accountable Bribery Commission.
However, the commissions cannot be given unnecessary independence just by declaring it as independent.’ He said.
