At least 70 people have died in Haiti in a brutal gang attackwhich also left 16 seriously injured, the UN said on Friday.

“Members of the Gran Grif gang, armed with automatic rifles, opened fire on the population and killed at least 70 people, including ten women and three children,” the UN human rights office said in a statement.

The massacre occurred Thursday night. Two of the seriously injured are members of a gang hit during a shootout with Haitian police.

The criminals “set fire to at least 45 houses and 34 vehicles”, forcing the inhabitants to flee.

“We are horrified by the attacks in Pont Sonde, in the Haitian department of Artibonite,” U.N. human rights office spokeswoman Thameen Al-Kheetan said in a statement.

Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world, It is mired in anarchy, with the growing presence of criminal gangs in the capital Port-au-Prince and security and health systems collapsing.

The High Commissioner calls for “greater international financial and logistical aid for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS) in Haiti”.

The MMAS is primarily composed by the Kenyan police and has just begun its mission in support of Haitian law enforcement.

They have great difficulty in opposing the heavily armed gangs that have been imposing themselves with blood and fire in the Haitian capital and its surroundings for many months.

At the end of September, The United States has announced sanctions against the leader of the Gran Grif gang, Luckson Elan, for his involvement in serious human rights abuses, as well as against a former member of parliament, Prophane Victor, for his role in training, supporting and supplying weapons to gangs.
