The Citizenship Affairs Commission is seeking additional information regarding Allison Reed’s compliance with the criteria established for granting Lithuanian citizenship. The date of the next meeting has not been determined. A. Reed has been invited to attend.
In June, ELTA reported that the Citizenship Affairs Commission had begun considering whether A. Reed should be granted citizenship as an exception. This consideration was later postponed to gather more information.
Following their review, the Citizenship Affairs Commission will submit a recommendation to the country’s president, who will make the final decision on citizenship approval. A. Reed submitted an official request for Lithuanian citizenship in February.
ELTA notes that this is not the first time A. Reed has requested exceptional citizenship from President Gitanas Nausėdas. Previously, a lack of a Lithuanian passport prevented her and her partner from participating in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
President Nausėda has recently expressed a more positive view of granting A. Reed citizenship, citing the couple’s notable achievements in figure skating. This stance differs from previous rejections of the skater’s citizenship requests.
At the European Figure Skating Championship in Kaunas in January, A. Reed and her partner won bronze medals and set personal records. This achievement parallels the 2006 championship, when Margarita Drobiazko and Povilas Vanagas also won bronze.
