Burkina: A decree being drafted to clean up the renewable and electrical energy market

Ouagadougou, June 27, 2023(AIB)-The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries organized on Tuesday a workshop to draft a decree, with a view to cleaning up the market for renewable and electric energies, but also putting an end to to the proliferation of equipment of dubious quality.

“The enthusiasm for renewable energies has had the effect of proliferating equipment of dubious quality. It is therefore necessary to clean up this market”, affirmed the Director General of Energy Dr Alidou Koutou.

Dr. Koutou was speaking Tuesday morning in Ouagadougou, at the opening of a workshop to develop a draft decree on the procedures for inspections and compliance tests for components, devices and equipment for renewable and electrical energy.

He recalled that the government in its desire to support the energy sector, has already adopted law 014/2017 on the general regulation of the said sector.

According to Alidou Koutou, this framework law has made it possible, among other things, to define the role and missions of the actors in the field, in particular the National Agency for Energy and Energy Efficiency (ANEREE).

According to him, the draft decree being developed aims to support ANEREE in cleaning up the market for components, appliances and equipment for renewable and electrical energy.

Alidou Koutou urged the thirty participants to ensure that the future decree is the appropriate response to questions from private sector players on ANEREE’s quality control mission on the one hand and on the other hand, that of consumers who only seek quality products.

For the Director General of ANEREE, Tobouré Gandré, this text comes at the right time to allow his structure to carry out its mission of quality control of solar equipment.

Burkina Faso Solar Cluster Board Chairman Jean Joël Kaboré said he was eager to see the decree passed, in order to put an end to the slumps caused by the flooding of the market with shoddy solar equipment.
