The head of the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed a decree to terminate its existence from January 1, 2024, 24news.am reports.

According to the decree, the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) will cease to exist on January 1, 2024, and all its government institutions and organizations will be dissolved.

This decision was made “in connection with the difficult military-political situation, based on the priority of ensuring the physical security and vital interests of the people of Artsakh, taking into account the agreements reached through the mediation of the command of the Russian peacekeeping forces.”

The population of Karabakh will have to “get acquainted with the conditions of reintegration presented by the Republic of Azerbaijan in order to make an independent and individual decision in the future on the possibility of staying (returning) to Nagorno-Karabakh.”

It was possible to agree with Azerbaijan on the unimpeded movement of residents of Karabakh along the Lachin corridor connecting the region with Armenia, including military personnel who have laid down their arms.

The decree comes into force immediately after its publication.

Let us recall that on September 19, Azerbaijan announced the holding of “anti-terrorist measures of a local nature” in Karabakh. According to Karabakh authorities, at least 200 people were killed. At least six Russian peacekeepers were also killed. The next day, the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire. The unrecognized republic agreed to lay down their arms. Currently, local residents are leaving Nagorno-Karabakh en masse – they are heading to Armenia.

The Autonomous Region of Nagorno-Karabakh was formed from the predominantly Armenian-populated part of the Azerbaijan region in 1923, and in 1936 it was renamed the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region (NKAO).

During the Karabakh war of 1992-1994, the region de facto came under the control of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, while being recognized by the international community as Azerbaijan.
