Today, Saturday, the Libya Monitor Center for Dialogue and Peacebuilding, in cooperation with the Media Center of the High National Elections Commission, organized a dialogue symposium entitled “Addressing the political blockage in holding general elections,” within the activities of the Political Parties Forum.

In his speech, the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Imad Al-Sayeh, expressed his appreciation for all the national contributions of civil society organizations, political parties and all partners concerned with the electoral process, in order to bring together viewpoints related to the future of Libya and the aspirations of Libyans for stability, renaissance and construction.

Al-Sayeh stressed the role of parties in supporting the success of electoral processes, due to their responsibility, especially in the field of electoral awareness and monitoring, calling for more contributions to spreading electoral culture, democratic awareness, and the culture of peaceful transfer of power.

The symposium activities included a dialogue on the possibility of implementing general electoral laws, during which the session’s facilitator, Mr. Khaled Al-Marimi from the Rased Centre, presented a general overview of electoral laws, and also discussed the necessary procedures to sustain the peaceful transfer of power in Libya.

The second session, moderated by Dr. Abdul Salam Al-Balazi, from the Monitoring Center, covered the conditions for forming a unified government, allowing the opportunity to present opinions on the challenges facing the electoral process.

The symposium concluded with a set of recommendations that translate the views of the participants on ways to address the political blockage in holding elections.

The symposium was attended by Abu Bakr Marada, member of the Commission’s Council, and a number of representatives of political parties, researchers, and those interested in electoral and political affairs.
