“Until now, we have not had such a space in the city of Vilnius. It is equipped according to the principle of three segments, where different levels of readiness and different drones can be operated”, Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas told journalists at the opening of the training space on Friday.

“The goal is very clear – seeing all the trends of the war in Ukraine, we see how important drones are in military conflicts, so there is a desire for the community, the society, to deepen their skills in piloting drones,” he explained the idea.

According to the head of the municipality, the training space will be open to all residents of the capital and other cities. True, in order to train in groups, registration will be required. In turn, representatives of the Riflemen’s Union and General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy will ensure the training of professional pilots.

“Basically, the space is open, it is accessible to everyone – Vilnius residents and non-Vilnius residents alike. (…) If there is a single person who wants to come and train with his drone, he can do so without any registration. In groups – we will ask you to register, there is a special website where you can register,” said the mayor.

V. Benkunskas noted that the establishment of the drone space is part of the Vilnius defense plan. According to the mayor, the installation of the latter zone required approximately 50 thousand. euros.

“All the works that have been done here – both the fencing of the territory and the preparation of the territory itself, the installation of special obstacles – cost about 50 thousand. euros”, he informed.

“The space is open, monitored by video cameras. The minimum maintenance that will be required will be ensured by the municipality”, noted V. Benkunskas.

More training areas may appear

V. Benkunskas emphasized that there may be more places in the capital that will be dedicated to the training of drone pilots.

“We are starting the warm season. We will see if there is a need to make any additional modifications in the future,” said the mayor.

“I do not rule out that in the near future there may be new spaces that will be dedicated to drone learning purposes in already closed premises,” he explained.
