At the end of last week, the State Police initiated a criminal trial for the fact that a young man born on March 28 in Old Riga in 2002 glorified military aggression and Vladimir Putin.

In an aggressive tone, the young man yelled out several phrases praising war crimes and the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Russian, knowing that what he said would be heard by the police officers of the Riga Municipality, as well as the persons who were at the scene of the incident, as well as any passerby.

The young man was under the influence of alcohol.

Officials of the State Police, upon receiving information about the incident, detained the person and placed him in a place of temporary detention.

The next day, March 29, the young man was recognized as a suspect and the State Police asked the Riga City Court to arrest the young man, which was done by the court’s decision. The young man had not been seen by the police before.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated for the incident according to the first part of Article 74.1 of the Criminal Law, that is, for public glorification, denial, justification or gross disparagement of genocide, crime against humanity, crime against peace or war crime.

Such a crime is punishable by deprivation of liberty for up to five years or by temporary deprivation of liberty, or by probation supervision, or by community service, or by a fine.

The State Police works in close cooperation with other Latvian security institutions, and any glorification of military aggression or justification of war crimes will not be tolerated, and the police will take strict action against such manifestations.
