A significant number of contracts were signed in the first quarter of 2022, but exits are also at a high level.

6,245,900 is the number of employment contracts that were signed in the 1st quarter of 2022 in metropolitan France in the private sector, according to a new study by Dares. A higher figure than before the health crisis points to the organization. Even more positive, the number of permanent contracts increased more than fixed-term contracts (+1.5% against +1%) compared to the previous quarter. However, this acceleration in recruitment is offset by that of departures. 6,116,400 contracts end in the 1st quarter of 2022, i.e. 0.2% more than in the 4th quarter of 2021.

In detail, 1,139,400 CDIs were signed against 5,106,600 CDDs. The upturn in the job market comes from establishments with 10 to 49 employees (+11.3%) and those with more than 50 employees (+4.6%). On the other hand, small structures are more struggling (-12.3%). Similarly, the increase is found in the three main sectors of activity: industry (+3.2%), construction (+2.7%) and the tertiary sector (+1%).

In the direction of the exits the movement is similar. 1,079,400 are for the end of permanent contracts and 5,036,900 are fixed-term contracts, the vast majority for less than one month. They are on the rise in medium (+9.6%) and large structures (+3.4%), while they are falling sharply in the smallest companies (-12.6%).

The specter of the great resignation

Between the awareness during confinement and the dynamism of the job market, more and more employees are starting to think about the idea of resigning. According to an OpinionWay study for Indeed published on May 24, it would be 35% to have never wanted to leave their job as much as they do now. A proportion that rises to 42% among those under 35.

In this sense, France is following a trend at work across the Atlantic. There, the phenomenon of resignation is such that the Americans have given it a name: “the great resignation(the big resignation).
