The European Union called for an independent investigation into the death of political activist Siraj Daghman, demanding the immediate release of those arbitrarily detained, who have not been formally charged or prosecuted.

In a statement, the European Union mission to Libya and the missions of member states of the Union urged “to conduct a comprehensive, transparent and independent investigation to ensure a full understanding of the incident and accountability,” according to the statement published on the mission’s website on Monday.

The European mission added: “We note with concern that the arrest of Daghman, like many other civil society representatives and activists, both citizens and foreigners, came without any formal charges being brought or subsequent judicial procedures.”

The mission called for the “immediate release” of all arbitrarily detained individuals, and adherence to due process and the rule of law throughout Libya.

The mission renewed the commitment of the European Union and member states to support Libya in its path towards stability and national reconciliation, while stressing the necessity of legal and procedural reforms to prevent further injustices and pave the way towards a Libya in which all people enjoy their rights.

The head of the Internal Security Service in Benghazi announced that Daghman died while trying to escape from the bathroom in his prison, while bloggers spoke of the “killing” of the 35-year-old activist.

Internal Security arrested Daghman more than 6 months ago, along with former member of the Transitional Council, Dr. Fathi Al-Baja, and political activist Tariq Al-Bashari, without referring them to the prosecution or formally directing specific charges against them.
