London scrolling by in fast motion, shocking images of the war in Afghanistan, brief close-ups of people in distress… When the first episode of Sherlock hit television, in July 2010 on BBC One and January 2011 on France 4, we never seen anything so edgy and intriguing. Centered on the traumas of a veteran, Dr. John Watson, this beginning suddenly completely changes direction and shows the London police in a press conference. She explains a case in front of journalists, but all receive mysterious text messages discrediting her: “False”, “false”, “false”!

Brilliant, unpredictable, almost unbearable, Sherlock Holmes enters the scene with this burst. Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a fascinating interpretation, boosted, modern, but faithful to the spirit of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels. Dr. Watson stands out as his equal, thanks to the talent of Martin Freeman embodying the gruff righteousness of a soldier with welcome empathy. The humor crackles between them and with the other characters, including the cheerful landlady Mrs Hudson (Una Stubbs), and a cantankerous sergeant played by Vinette Robinson.

Sophistication rare

From 2010 to 2017, in four seasons, 14 episodes are released, treated as 90-minute films. The plots written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, brilliant screenwriters of Dr Who, demonstrate a rare sophistication. Meanwhile, another series, Elementary, sets Holmes, played by Jonny Lee Miller, in New York and casts Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson.

Very successful although less innovative, Elementary lasts seven seasons in 154 episodes from 2012 to 2019. Happy fans of the Baker Street detective! They enjoy both series. They compare during ardent discussions the British brilliance to the American efficiency. Holmes and Watson enter the 21st century twice.
