A fashion show, part of the program of the Fashion Week in London, angered Greece, reported AFP, quoted by BTA. The site of the show was the British Museum, and the models paraded in front of the Parthenon friezes, which the Greek authorities have been demanding to be returned to the country for decades.
The designer Erdem Moralioglu, who was inspired by the image of the Greek opera singer Maria Callas and her famous performance in the play “Medea” in 1953, has chosen the impressive decor of the exhibition hall with the famous antique sculptures to present the collection of his eponymous fashion brand “Erdem” for the autumn-winter season 2024-2025.
By organizing a fashion show in the hall where the Parthenon friezes are located, the British Museum has once again shown that it has no respect for the masterpieces of the sculptor Phidias, Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said in a statement on Saturday.
The management of the British Museum devalues and insults not only the monument, but also the universal values it carries. The conditions under which the sculptures are exhibited in the Duvin Gallery are deteriorating day by day. It is time for this stolen masterpiece to return to Athens, Mendoni added.
