Riot in Beit Shemesh: An IDF soldier was violently attacked by hundreds of Haredim in the Yehuda Hanasi neighborhood in Beit Shemesh, who chased her, cursed her and threw stones and cans at her. Police arrived at the scene in an undercover vehicle and rescued the soldier, while two suspects who threw stones were arrested on the spot.

In an interview that was broadcast today (Thursday) here on Network B, the soldier told about the incident that happened the day before when she was waiting for the bus on her way to Bed 1. “I was standing at the station, until the bus arrived there were some ultra-Orthodox who cursed and threatened me,” she said. “When the bus arrived they threatened the driver that they will burn his bus if he takes me on. I moved away and started walking, and they chased me.”

Over time, the incident turned into a violent riot: “Suddenly, hundreds of children, boys and adults started coming out of the houses, yelling at me to ‘fuck off’ and throwing stones and cans at me. I felt surrounded and helpless.” At a certain point the soldier met three girls and begged them to help her get out of the place, and they led her to their house and hid her from the crowd that surrounded the house and tried to break down the door.

Later, the soldier called the police, and the officers arrived in an undercover vehicle and not in a car to avoid another confrontation and due to the concern of the family members who were guarding her. The soldier was dressed in a skirt given to her by the girls of the house and taken out of the place “disguised” as an ultra-Orthodox girl. “The crowds stood outside and the police cleared a road,” she said. “While leaving, the ultra-orthodox snatched the policeman’s radio and threw it to the crowd standing outside.”

It was also reported that the female soldier was injured by the objects thrown at her. “It was shocking. The whole event lasted from ten o’clock at night until early in the morning,” she concluded. “If it wasn’t for the family that hid me, I don’t know how it would have ended.”

The police said in response that “the police were called to the scene and rescued the female soldier while the force was also under attack. Police officers of the Beit Shemesh station arrested two suspects red-handed who were throwing stones. The investigation to locate all those involved continues.”
