Social media platform Snapchat has now removed a certain type of feature. On the face, the feature that allowed traditional Maori tattoos was removed. The filters were withdrawn after a huge protest from the Maori community in New Zealand.

The Maori consider green piercing very sacred. It is considered an important sign of the wearer’s identity. The outcry was heavy as many people used this filter on social media and shared it on social media.

Radio New Zealand showed images of people using filters with names such as ‘Maori face tattoo’ and ‘Maori’ on the popular platform Instagram. Snapchat’s company, Snap, has confirmed that the filter has been removed.

Facial tattoos, or moko, have been part of Maori culture for centuries. They are tattooed on the body during an important ceremony. Apart from that, this tattoo is also used as a way to mark the unique lineage and heritage of each wearer.

Similarly, tattoos are different for men and women. Men’s tattoos extend from the forehead to the throat, while women’s tattoos usually extend from the lips to the chin. On social media, many people have posted many pictures using this same filter. This led to widespread protests.

There has been a resurgence of interest in moko among Maori men and women. According to the New Zealand Museum, since 2000, the moko has become more visible and recognized.
