More than 500 m3 of waste went up in smoke last night on the BCE company site in Livry-Louvercy, near Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne). Flames several meters high and smoke were visible from several kilometers around. The fire broke out around 2 a.m. on the company’s land, near the departmental 944 and the A4. This company from Marne offers a second life to plastic materials. It recycles waste usually buried or incinerated.

In the middle of the night, around thirty firefighters from Mourmelon-le-Grand, Reims, Épernay Verzenay and Châlons-en-Champagne were mobilized. The pile of stored plastic waste which caught fire caused an impressive fire. On social networks, Sdis posted videos detailing the extent of the damage. It took them many hours to contain the fire. At the start of the morning this Wednesday, November 1, the firefighters were still working with their hoses and the smoke was still spreading on the site.

The intervention of fire fighters fortunately made it possible to bring the fire under control and limit the risk of spreading to other piles of waste. No one was injured but the company is facing the loss of its stock of waste for recycling. An investigation has been opened by the gendarmerie which will allow us to find out more about the start of this fire in the middle of the night. No avenue is currently favored.
