Flying taxis seem to be the new fashionable mode of urban travel. While France wishes to develop this new mobility on the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the architecture firm Foster + Partners unveiled its concept of “vertiport”, an airport for flying taxis, for Dubai, the capital, in early April. of the United Arab Emirates, reports CNN. It could see the light of day as early as 2026.

To develop this building concept, the firm worked in collaboration with the AAM (advanced air mobility company) Skyports Infrastructure. Both had previously obtained the agreement of the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This flying taxi airport would be set up next to Dubai International Airport. This mobility should here make it possible to ensure a rapid connection between the city center and the airport, without generating pollution, since the vehicles would be electric.

A long-standing project

“We are delighted to have developed a vertiport concept for the emerging AAM industry, which will transform the way people travel in Dubai,” said David Summerfield, studio head at Foster +, in a press release. Partners. On the images presented by the cabinet, one can in particular see the interior of the aerodrome and the landing strip on which the taxis would leave and arrive.

This “vertiport” is part of a long-standing Dubai project to equip itself with flying taxis. As early as 2017, the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai announced that it wanted to offer driverless drones that could accommodate passengers, on the model of the single-seater manufactured by the Chinese company EHang. In February, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum assured that flying taxis will be offered in the city within three years. This vertiport is one of four locations being considered by Skyports Infrastructure and the RTA.
