A forest within the village: Unreal people integrated

by time news

Annuar: In Masakkakundan Settipalayam panchayat, the villagers have grown 2,000 trees and created thick forest in just 40 cents of land.

Out of the 21 panchayats in Annuar union, the largest panchayat is Masakakundan Settipalayam. There are a lot of factories and factories in this panchayat. Due to this the area was warm. Ground water table has gone down to thousand feet due to over extraction of ground water for industrial uses.

Subsequently, the people of Semmani Settipalayam decided in a town meeting to make this area green. In January 2021, it was decided to set up a dense forest at 40 cents in Varakulam in the town. Subsequently, 2,000 tree saplings were planted with the cooperation of the Panchayat administration. At present the trees have grown to a height of 16 feet.

Let’s hear what people have to say about how it’s possible…

It was decided in the town meeting that we planted 2,000 saplings in 40 cent plots, three feet by three feet. We have sensitized the herdsmen in this area not to damage the saplings by cattle, usually if saplings are planted, 50 percent of them do not grow fully. Taking this as a challenge, we planted new saplings where there were dead saplings and completely grew 2000 trees. Since it was 3 feet by 3 feet, the trees began to grow rapidly upwards in search of sunlight.

We pruned the side branches as they grew so as not to disturb the growth of the trees, and in 18 months, most of these trees had grown to 16 feet tall.

23 types of saplings have been planted such as Sorkka Maram, Siru Nelli, Perunelli, Pala, Poovarasan, Nawal, Thiruvodu, Cheetapalm, Neem, Vilvam, Senbakapoo, Sapota, Ilandai.

Saplings have been planted to attract butterflies and scorpions, and saplings to attract crows and sparrows.

Sparrows are now nesting in many trees. Many birds come and sit here. Due to this the heat has decreased in this area. Ground water level is rising.

In the initial stage, there were tasks like weeding and watering one day after another.

At present we water only once in ten days through drip irrigation. And because the trees are so close together, weeds don’t get there. Hence, maintenance is very easy. In the next phase, we are planning to plant saplings in other parts of the town.

They said this.

Appreciation is pouring in for the people of this village who created a dense forest in a very small space.
