We follow the Niyodo through residential areas, rice fields, villages, the riverbed becomes wider, the world is greener, the sun is shining. It goes uphill, we drive past hostels with colorful carp flags waving in front of them. At one point we see a massive bridge, the Aso Chinkabashi, the river leads far into gorges of green and green and even more green.
We are traveling in rural Japan on Shikoku, the smallest Japanese main island, and this sunny day has a beauty, you want to cut a painting out of reality and keep it inside yourself so you don’t forget it, this strange yet familiar nature, this blue sky and this wide, calm river whose blue-green waters are described as the purest in Japan and even have a name: Niyodo-blue.
