Ganzourgou: A guided tour of moringa production sites in Noessé

Zorgho, (AIB) – The Sanbrado Mines Company (SOMISA) organized on September 20, 2023 a guided tour of moringa production sites in the village of Noessé site, commune of Boudry. Under the chairmanship of the prefect, President of the special delegation (PDS) of the said commune, D. Mohamed Ouédraogo, local authorities and community representatives took part.

In the village of Noessé site, close to the Sanbrado gold mine, around twenty women run a moringa leaf production field over an area of around 500 m2. Further in the village of Sanbrado, in the storage warehouse, already harvested leaves are dried, transformed into powder and packaged in packages that attract the attention of visitors. These activities are part of a moringa promotion and valorization project initiated by SOMISA for the benefit of women in communities impacted by the Sanbrado gold project.

The guided tour of these achievements aims to allow local authorities and populations to experience the mine’s efforts to restore the livelihoods of impacted communities.

The process of transforming moringa leaves presented to the participants.

According to the senior coordinator of the SOMISA livelihood restoration program, Sansan Hugues Kambiré, four other nutritious gardens similar to that of Noessé site are being set up in the villages of Mankarga Traditionnel, Douré, Pilaka and Sanbrado, localities bordering the mining site.

For him, this project, which is in its pilot phase, aims to enable beneficiaries to massively produce these leaves with multiple benefits, not only to improve their diet and the nutrition of children but also for marketing.

Fati Zagré thanks SOMISA for what they learned through this project.

This project, implemented in partnership with the Beoog-Neere Association of Ganzourgou (ABNG) and with the technical support of the Boudry departmental environment service, saw the implementation of several activities, notably the capacity building of women at several levels, the provision of materials necessary for production, processing and preparation of production sites.

Lasting one year, this pilot phase of the project will end in February 2024 and according to Mr. Kambiré, an assessment will be made to capitalize on the achievements with a view to launching the second phase of the project.

For the President of the special municipal delegation of Boudry, D. Mohamed Ouédraogo, this activity is essential for the communities and especially for women. For him, this can help fight against poverty at the grassroots level because women will now find a job at the production level, at the processing level and even at the marketing level. “It is a value chain which, well organized, will contribute to helping the municipality. ” he said.

Presentation of the activities carried out within the framework of the project to the participants.

He thanked SOMISA and hoped that this type of initiative would be duplicated within several communities in the department. “It helps ease tensions between the mine and the communities. » he clarified.

He asked the beneficiaries to actively involve themselves in the project activities to benefit even after the closure of the mine.

The director of promotion and development of non-timber forest products at the general directorate of green economy and climate change, Ms. Gertrude Coulibaly/Yaméogo, said she was impressed by what she saw and heard.

For her, the investments put in place are enormous. She welcomed the installation of water basins to make it easier for women to water the plans. Ms. Coulibaly welcomed the choice of the site which, according to her, is suitable for growing moringa given the appearance of the plants. Gertrude Coulibaly/Yaméogo reassured women of the multiple benefits of moringa and its high demand on the market and invited them to indulge in this activity.

She suggested that SOMISA include baobab plants in nutritious gardens, ensure labeling of packaging of finished moringa products, and support women in certifying their products.

The president of the women’s cooperative, Fati Zagré thanked SOMISA, the environmental agents and ABNG for the support in the activities of this project. For her, it is a very beneficial activity and she would like more support. She expressed the availability of project beneficiaries to share their experiences with other women, while inviting them all to unity and cohesion.
