“I have no right to stop writing what I lived to sit down and write what I imagine,” said the Spanish writer of Jewish origin, Max Aub.

Under this premise, the painter, troubadour and writer from Caimito, Reinier Rodríguez Cruz, wrote the poem El hymno de las misericordias, which has just received the third prize in the 2023 Millennial Olive Oil-Liquid Gold International Competition, convened in Spain.

In this work, Reinier ventured to summarize his hard personal and family experience when the covid lashed us without mercy, deprived us of valuable lives, greatly affected the health of many human beings and seemed like an endless hell.

“I tried to protect my entire family, especially my son, and suddenly I found myself in serious condition at the Caimito polyclinic. It was a really dramatic day, from which I miraculously escaped.

“There came a time when I couldn’t swallow even a single spoonful of food. While I was hospitalized, I saw several people die and that leaves an indelible mark on any human being,” says Reinier.

In this contest, in which more than 300 poems from various countries competed, first place went to the Spanish Sara de Lezcano Mujica Hernández, for her work Porque volvieras, while second place went to her compatriot José Repíso Moyano for I am olive tree…with an unspeakable truth!
