Theater, opera and ballet focus on the weak, the bad, the cowards, the heroes and also the “normal”, the crazy, the clever and even the boring. These are the people with whom the funny, sad, exciting and good and sometimes bad stories are brought to the big and small stages of this world. Theater, opera and ballet therefore need a big heart and are per se geared towards diversity and tolerance. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when cultural institutions often take the lead when it comes to gender-appropriate language and want to make those groups visible in written language that have mostly been ignored or discriminated against: women, gays or trans people.

It is understandable that there are many people who generally find it difficult to deal with such changes, even if they are not exposed to any disadvantages or even discrimination by colons, underscores, asterisks or capital letters. And yes, they exist, the exaggerations that make many a friend of the German language shudder. This is precisely why art, culture, the media and parties are called upon to advance society here, to show solidarity, but at least not to simply stifle the debate about what makes sense and what doesn’t.

Actually, it doesn’t take much to find gender-appropriate language, if not good, but at least to accept it. A little compassion, nothing more. Of course, you don’t have to expect empathy from the AfD, a party that, by the way, likes to use the narrative of the banned party again and again with a view to the Greens. So now she wants to ban herself – gender language. But what happened to the FDP and CDU, who should know that this is also an attack on autonomy and artistic freedom? They are the ones who are starting a “culture war” here that nobody needs and is of no use to anyone except the AfD.
